Its vitally important to the engines performance and fuel economy. I’ll be glad to help if you decide you want to do it but I’m just warning you I’ve been there done that and fixed lots of other peoples cheaply bought diesels and nobody has left here cheap. The Fuel Injection Control Module sends an electrical impulse to the injector, to deliver the correct amount of fuel to the engine cylinder at the precise moment its needed. There are a lot of things to look for and a lot of which can’t be checked without hearing it run. It was good enough for a hay truck which is what it was but wouldn’t of made someone like you looking to use it or swap it very happy. Once I got the IDM replaced it ran but on 7 of 8 cylinders which was a quick diag to find no oil coming from the number 8 injector and once replaced ran “pretty good” but had a bunch of blow by and not so wonderful compression.

the IDM( injector driver module on those is mounted to the driver side under the hood where rain water eventually finds its way into the module and destroys it ) was full of water which had completely killed the driver side bank. just recently fixed a 96 at my house that had been sitting for years and years because they couldn’t figure it out. and before I get ahead of myself buzz test needs to primarily pass for it to start they’re famous for IDM issues and under valve cover wiring harness issues. crank it over and look at icp and see if you have atleast 500psi. I wouldn’t consider it without having some sort of diagnostic equipment autel/snap on etc.

I wouldn’t say the CPS is a common no start honestly and would skip that.

It could have endless amounts of blow by etc.

It would be a huge gamble to purchase without hearing it run.
